The BEST way:
'The BEST way' has been developed from our school values (aroha, honesty, respect, responsibility & self-discipline) to support our akonga (learners) in representing these values in everything they do.
B = best "I will try my best at everything I do"
E = engaged "I will stay focused on the important things"
S = sensible "I will show that I am sensible in my actions and words."
T = thinking "I will think about the best decisions to make for my learning and when interacting with others."
Schoolwide Behaviour Matrix:
This has been created to support our students, by teaching them (and referring back to the matrix) how we would like them to behave at school for improved learning outcomes. The BEST way has been used our foundation of how to behave in each area of the school.
Student Problem Process:
Staff noticed that many students were getting involved in other people's problems/issues/incidents rather than allowing the staff to sort the problems out. This often resulted in several students running around in a heightened state during break times. At the time MAS were in the process of developing systems to support students in the playground and supporting staff with professional development based on the PB4L (positive behaviour for learning) approaches. The student problem process chart was a result of this work to support student efficacy.
The ZONE:
The ZONE has been created to provide a space where 'dysregulated' students can enter to regulate themselves so that they can return to class and access learning. This space is supervised by a staff member and students may enter with a ZONE pass. A zone pass can be obtained by asking the teacher for one, or a teacher give a student one as a suggestion. There is a maximum of two passes issued per class at any one time.
The space has soft lighting and relaxing music playing as well as an essential oil diffuser. These sensory devices assist the students to relax and feel calm. Most students stay on average 30 minutes and there are a range of activities for them to choose to do:
mindful colouring
drawing
relaxing foot spa
play dough
manipulative play
quiet/alone time
yoga
breathing
The ZONE is popular with students and data has shown that they prefer quiet time and mindfulness activities.
There is fruit and water available each day and opportunities to sleep if that is needed, with hotties, blankets and cuddly toys.
